A bit about Liz

Liz Navratil currently works as a night crime and general assignment reporter for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, a major metropolitan newspaper covering western Pennsylvania. Her favorite nights are spent wandering throughout the city with a police scanner, visiting the courts and scrambling to find fast food between visits to crime scenes.

Six months after the paper hired her, Liz produced solo coverage of the shooting at Chardon High School in Ohio, where three students died after a teenager opened fire in the building’s cafeteria. She traveled to Penn State University to help produce team coverage following the indictment of former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky and the subsequent riots.

The editors hired her as a two-year associate in September 2011, about two years after she completed a copy editing internship working on the paper’s suburban and early Sunday editions and wire copy. Liz also completed reporting internships at The Denver Post, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer and the Lancaster New Era (now Intelligencer Journal-Lancaster New Era) and served as editor in chief for her college newspaper, The Pitt News.

She speaks French, hopes to learn more languages and dreams of one day working in a war zone.
